Prominent educationists of the world have written a letter to President Draupadi Murmu against Visva Bharati University Vice Chancellor Vidyut Chakraborty in West Bengal.
The President is the ex-officio Professor of Visva Bharati Central University. Nearly 300 professors, educationists, researchers and students of prestigious institutions have written to him accusing him of harassing Nobel laureate Amartya Sen to please the BJP.
In a letter written to the President, it has been alleged that Vice-Chancellor of Visva Bharati, Nobel laureate economist Amartya Sen is being harassed to please the BJP. A request has been made to the President to intervene in this matter. He has written in the letter that there is an ideological difference between Professor Sen and the present government in India. Taking advantage of this, the Vice-Chancellor of Visva Bharati is behaving like this to please the BJP. He requested that you control the Vice-Chancellor as the custodian of the University.
This letter has created a stir in the education sector of the world. Most of those standing with Amartya Sen and standing against the Vice Chancellor are from abroad. There are many people in the country. The Nobel laureate has found support from academics. Among the signatories to the letter are the renowned Massachusetts Professor of Economics James K. Bowes, Professor Jeanine Rodgers of the International Institute of Development Studies in Geneva and Prabhat Patnaik, Professor of Economics, JNU, etc.
The dispute between Visva Bharati University and Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen is over the 13 decibel land of Pratichi, his home in Santiniketan. The university claims that the place has been occupied.
On the other hand, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took out the records from the Land and Land Revenue Department and handed them over to Amartya Sen and said that no seizure has taken place. Professor Sen has filed a case in Bolpur court. The matter will be heard on June 13.
Earlier, about 300 professors and educationists of the world had written a letter to the President demanding action against the Vice-Chancellor. Earlier, Professor Sen himself had accused the Vice-Chancellor of harassing him due to political opposition. After the matter of harassment of Amartya Sen came to light, the educationists and intellectuals of the state first raised their voice against the Vice Chancellor and now it has reached the President.
